New Reality-Flipping Photos by Erik Johansson

Photographer and artist Erik Johansson has always been a cut above the rest. The Berlin-based creative is a master at photo manipulation, where he takes photos of everyday life and retouches them to make them appear not of this world. As he states, "I don’t capture moments, I capture ideas. To me photography is just a way to collect material to realize the ideas in my mind."
Throughout the years we've seen his client list grow to include such tech heavyweights as Google, Adobe and Microsoft but it's always been his personal work that has had us coming back for more. The self-taught artist is meticulous when it comes to assembling his shots. He never uses stock photography because, as he states, "I always want to be in complete control of my photos and feel like I’ve done everything myself. It limits me in a way that I can’t realize all ideas I have, but limitations are good sometimes to define the work. A similar light and perspective is extremely important to create a realistic result when combining the photos."
Here are some fantastic works that Johansson has created throughout the past few years. Notice how he almost always incorporates elements of nature such as water, snow or land.....

Overlaps Reveal Similarities Between Fathers and Sons

UK-based photographer Craig Gibson captures the uncanny physical resemblances between fathers and sons by overlapping portraits of the pairs in his aptly titled series Boys And Their Fathers. The collection of images, which Gibson so kindly referred us to, present a look at the genetic bond that these men and their boys share. He displays each individual's image separately, accompanied by a merged portrait that is especially revealing of their facial likenesses.
While the portraits, side by side, are clearly of two different individuals, there are undeniable similarities that sync up when they are layered atop one another. They appear to have far more physical attributes in common than one would notice by simply looking at them next to each other. Of course, Gibson takes dozens of images of each subject to pair the right angles and positions together, but it is an eye-opening look at hereditary parallels, nonetheless.....

Intimate, Voyeuristic Photos of People Sleeping

Just how much do we move around when we sleep? What exactly does it look like? Is it chaotic and crazy or fantastically fluid? The late photographer Ted Spagna devoted his life to photographing humans sleeping in order to investigate the relationship between art and science and to satisfy his own curiosity about sleep behavior. According to his website, "What compelled him the most was his endless curiosity about the unknowable sleeping psyche and the desire to inspire exploration, discovery and learning." Interestingly, Spagna's photos helped scientists to observe that we have 90-minute sleep-dream cycles. Through his work, we learned that sleepers become inactive while sleeping.....

Incredible Colorized Photos by Amateur Historians

ColorizedHistory is a subreddit created by the talented photo editor Mads Madsen, aka zuzahin, that focuses on taking old, black and white images and restoring their color. With nearly 25,000 devoted community members, the stock of colorized photos continue to grow and shine a new light on history. They seek to be historically accurate and as believable as possible, in terms of color assignment. As such, the contributors are often history buffs themselves with a penchant for photography.
Though it may seem to be expert work, many of the members of the community are actually amateurs driven by their passion for photo editing and historical accuracy. In fact, they refer to themselves as "Amateur Historians." They simply tackle any number of monochromatic images from yesteryear, breathing a new life into them with meticulously applied tints and tone. There are no specific eras or subjects required for the images featured in the pool. The collection includes any images taken from the dawn of photography in the 19th century to just decades ago, predating the advent of color film.....

Pic of the Day: Baby Coyotes Learn How to Howl

This photo is almost too adorable to be real! The amazing capture is by photographer Debbie DiCarlo, a self-professed lover of all things nature including plants, animals and landscapes. As she states about this photo she's titled Howling Lesson,"I was so thrilled to have seen and heard this...adult coyote and two pups howling." It was taken in Hinkley, Minnesota.
As Debbie told us, "I was in Hinkley attending a photography workshop and had the opportunity to witness those adorable coyote pups playing and exploring. When they all started to howl, I couldn't take enough photos! The puppies were so adorable and seemed to be smiling and having a great time.

Ben DeHaan's Mind-Boggling Melting Portraits

It's one thing to allow paint to streak and drip down a canvas, but photographer Ben DeHaan creates the same trickling technique with photographs for his series titled Uncured. Meet Norm, the Personality-Filled Pug

In the latest issue of Ludique Magazine, the online publication all about mobile photography, you'll find a great little story about one of the most personality-filled pugs you'll ever come across. Seattle-based Jeremy Veach has been the proud owner of Norm, his four-legged friend, since the pup was just 8 weeks old (he's now 1 1/2). Soon after Jeremy got him, he started taking photos of the photogenic dog, inspired by some canine favorites like good 'ol Maddie, and began posting them on Instagram. (Jermzlee now has almost 24,000 followers.)
Most hilarious are the "selfies" where it looks like Norm is taking a picture of himself. All in all, we can appreciate how owner Jeremy always changes things up, adding funny captions and even posing with Norm in a few of the shots....

Stunning Shots of Fly Geyser, Nevada's Hidden Treasure

As you all know by now, we love finding extraordinary destinations off the beaten path like Lake Baikal in Siberia. Today, we bring you another one which can only be described as surreal or otherworldly. Fly Geyser (or Fly Ranch Geyser) is a a small geothermal geyser that is located approximately 20 miles north of Gerlach, in Washoe County, Nevada. Called "one of the most beautiful sights in Nevada," the geyser is a little-known tourist attraction even to Nevada residents.
Accidentally created in 1916 during well drilling, the geyser started spewing water in the 1960s when a geothermally heated pack of water found a weak spot in the wall and began escaping. Dissolved minerals rose and accumulated creating the mound on which the geyser sits. Water now continually spews into the air, reaching up to 5 feet, making it resemble a miniature volcano.
I like what the photographer Jared Ropelato says about it, "As you walk around Fly Geyser you notice that this thing has a bit of Beauty, and a bit of the Beast. A little Jeckyl and a little Hyde. The color however, is like a rainbow on all sides."
Photographer Christian Klepp described it this way, "This weird and unearthly landscape could have existed somewhere on Jupiter's volcanic moon Io....Such unearthly landscapes are rare on Earth, but they exist. Maybe this helps to imagine how Earth might have looked like at its very beginning. Heat and sulfur resistant bacteria feed on the boiling water of the geyser. Just like in the beginning of life on Earth."
Here are some of our favorite photos of one of the world's most amazing places....

London Landmarks Look Like They're Submerged in Water

London isn't underwater but photographer Rupert Jordan sure knows how to make it seem that way for his River London series. Perspective is key in the crafty photographer's images of London landmarks like the London Eye and Big Ben. Getting into the water himself, Jordan forces viewers to see the towering architecture as though it, too, is submerged....

So what's next? Only time will tell. Till then, take a look at SLR Lounge's article that lists the five lessons we can all learn from this newest marketing craze....

Turquoise Icebergs Dot Iceland's Black Sand Beach

If this isn't one of the most incredible places to photograph, we don't know what is! Photographers from all over the world flock to Jökulsárlón Beach in south-eastern Iceland to capture the beautiful icebergs that wash ashore. Floated into the sea from a nearby glacial lagoon, the turquoise colored icebergs are a stunning contrast against the black sand beach. While the ocean has melted some of the icebergs away, many of the ones that wash ashore have been beautifully sculptured by the wind and water, appearing like sparkling jewels in a vast desert.
As Orvar Atli Borgeirsson stated, "The beach below the popular and beautiful Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is strewn with small icebergs that float from the lagoon down the short Jökulsá á Breiðarmerkursandi. Although the river is quite powerful it does only bring small icebergs into the ocean....
